Our Blueway Air Conditioner

We purchased a very reasonably priced Blueway Split Inverter Air Conditioner for our living room from Harvey Norman. The Air Conditioner is a Blueway AS24-VR with 6000watt cooling capacity (we don’t really care about the heating up here in the tropics, but the air conditioner also has 8000watt heating capacity).

Blueway Split Inverter Air Conditioner

As you can see in the photo the head unit of the AS24-VR is quite large. It almost didn’t fit between the ceiling and the window, which was a problem we hadn’t planned for in purchasing an air conditioner.

The external compressor unit of the Blueway air conditioner I have found to be very quiet, but like the head unit the compressor unit is quite large.

The Blueway Air Conditioner does an adequate job at cooling our main living area, but given the odd shape of the room I don’t think any other air conditioning brand would do any better. The swing mechanism on the head unit doesn’t have much range, so to get it to blow straight out into the overhead fan I need to manually adjust the swing mechanism.

The air conditioning installation technician didn’t have much bad to say about the units. He reckons that they run pretty well and he hasn’t noticed any difference in reliability over most of the other better known brands. This is pretty good considering that the Blueway air conditioner was close to half the price of some of the better known brands.

Being in Townsville I haven’t really had any need to use the heater function, but like I said, it’s there if you want it.

Update:

Here is the list of Blueway Air Conditioner Error Codes.

We have one as well and like you say it does what it’s supposed to at half the price.
Just wondering did HN tell you if you can attach another head to the unit for another room?

  2. Bill Hutchison Post author

I was never told that we could attach a second head, but we did our Blue Way Air Conditioner from Harvey Norman though.

Unfortunately information on Blueway Air Conditioners is very limited on-line, so I can’t even find anything referring to that.

Did Harvey Norman tell you that you could add a second head? If so that might be an option for us to add the second head for master bedroom, which is right under the living room, with the compressor just outside master bedroom the window.

  3. Lou Tomati

I called Harvey Norman and asked if we could attach a second head to the compressor and the answer is “NO” as this unit is not built for it.
He told me it’s far cheaper to buy a small unit for the bedroom with another compressor for around $500 plus about $450 for installation.

  4. Bill Hutchison Post author

Thanks for the information about the Dual Heads on the Blueway Airconditioners.

I know that there are a few different air conditioner manufacturers that offer the dual head option, but for the price I don’t mind that the Blueway doesn’t support the two air conditioning heads on the single compressor.

Please advise me, how to use remote operate for Blueway air conditioner, specially for heater.

  6. Bill Hutchison Post author

Living in North Queensland we have never actually had to run the heater on our Blueway Air Conditioner.

I just tried it now and when I set it to heater nothing happens. I don’t know if that’s because it is already quite warm here (although I set the Air Conditioner to 30C), or something else.

You might want to check with Harvey Norman, who is the only reseller I have heard of selling Blueway Air Conditioners. They might be able to give you a hand, or have a manual in their store that they can look at.

Have a Blueway airconditioner installed (split unit) I have trouble with remote control batteries inside of a week. Could you assist with any information on this matter. The controls have a number on the back, which is ZH/LW-10

  9. Bill Hutchison Post author

Your best bet would be to contact Harvey Norman about it.

Usually the batteries that come with remotes though are pretty cheap and don’t last long. It would probably be worth trying out some new batteries to see if that fixes it.

  10. Gary Chapman

I have been using good alkaline batteries (Duracel and Evertready) in the remote, but they still only last a week.

  11. Bill Hutchison Post author

I would say that the remote is probably faulty. One of the buttons could be stuck on, making the remote constantly transmit.

I would bring it in to Harvey Norman and hope that they can give you a new remote.

We have installed 3 reverse cycle blueways in our home two larger ones and one smaller unit for the bedroom. We have had tech out four times to fix and now another has gone E4 error this time. Would never recommend as getting onto service is crap when we call Harvey Norman you get the phone juggle and then no return calls so if you are looking at purchasing Blueway you get what you pay for i suppose. when working they are good.

  13. Lyn

Would love to know how you got on with remotes, have 3 blueway aircons and they are the bain of my existence. 2 out of 3 remotes do not work, 1 aircon did not work to start and took alot of heated phone calls to get it fixed. Harvey Norman in Cairns (place of purchase) were absolutely of no assistance whatsoever and no longer stock the product due to so many problems. Would like to be able to replace remotes at least, or am looking at the expense of replacing 3 air cons. No smiley face here.

  14. Billy

All the above I have gone through…

    Great installation.. Very professional
AC/ great, very strong and cold!!

    E4….????????????????????????

Has anyone found out what this ‘E4’ code is??

Please help, as all other avenues are like driving around a ‘ round a bout ‘…

  15. Bill Hutchison Post author

Unfortunately I am not sure where you would purchase a new remote control for your air conditioner.

There are a few multi-function remotes that include controls for an air conditioner. You might have to look at one of those.

we have e4 on our blueway aircon i feel its not working very well does anyone know what e4 is

  17. JD

    Hi all,

E4 is an external unit fault. We kept on getting this error and the tech advised us however he couldnt find a fault with the outdoor unit. He checked compressor, fan, electrics etc. Eventually he just replaced the board inside the actual aircon unit and it fixed the problem.

This is the second board replaced in two of our units now and all our units (3) have had problems. Again do not buy a Blueway.

By the way they have reverted back to there asian name of CHIGO stay clear unless you want the headache of some of the worst backup on earth.

    JD

  18. Billy

    Thanks JD.

If you are in Sydney, can you please send me the number of the person who changed the borads for you?

I can’t even get someone to do mine.

    please send details to:

Remote for blueway faulty. rang the phone number advised by Harvey Norman Cairns. Crap customer service , quoted $100 – $150 for a replacement remote and told to fax an order – they did not want to deal with orders over the phone.

  20. Bill Hutchison Post author

Ouch, that is a painful experience.

Have you considered trying a universal remote and see if you can program it to work? I have a universal remote that has an option for Air Conditioners. I have not tried it with our Blueway Air Conditioner, but the remote only cost about $20.00 and I reckon that if you couldn’t get it to work you might even be able to return it. We got our remote from Wow.

    Hi Billy,

If you contact Blueway in Sydney they should have contractors who undertake all of there repairs. I am on The Gold Coast. Try calling these guys Koolcalm Air 07 55733 744 as they do all Brisbane and Gold Coast and deal with Sydney office so should be able to point you in the right direction. Best of luck

We would not recomend ever buying a Blueway air-con. We had 1 installed, purchased from Harvey Norman Townsville. it broke down almost immediately. HN refered us to Blueway in NSW. It has been a full year and we are still having to go through legal channels to get Blueway to stand behind their warranty. We ended up having to fix it ourselves. Blueway’s service manager will NOT return your calls or do anything.

  23. JD

    Hi Erika,

I sent an email directly to Blueway in Sydney and advised them that i was going to make a complaint to the Office of fair trading (Qld) regarding there product not being of merchanable quality. The product must be fit for the purpose it was intended for (tell them this) it makes them know that you know your rights.

We had them fix ours for free and it was out of warranty by at least 1 year. Advise them that you will give them 7 days to respond before lodging your complaint with office of fair trade.

It took them 2 days to respond to my email. Forget going through Harvey Norman as they are absolutley pathetic. Go straight to the source.

I should put up a webpage of all the Blueway complaints??

    Hope this helps.

    JD

  24. Brett Plowman

JD have you got the email address for Blue Way in Sydney? I have been screwed by Harvey Norman Bundall on the Gold Coast. They say they have no record of me purchasing the piece of crap from them so can’t help. Since they were the exclusive supplier I find that hard to believe.
If you could send me Blue Way Sydney contact details it would be appreciated
    Regards

I have had my side cover stolen on the outside compressor unit on my Blueway AC unit.
Can they be replaced as a spare part?

I wish I caught them in the Act
    Regs Adam

  26. JD

    Hi Brett,

I will get the number for you as soon as i can. harvey Norman Bundall are the same morons i had trouble with, absolutely useless. They stuff you around from pillar to post and hope it goes away. SHAME ON HARVEY NORMAN BUNDALL.

    JD

  27. JD

    Brett,

Try this email first with your complaint as this is how i got mine fixed. Let them know you are unhappy with Harvey Normans response and you want the aircon repaired. I had to send a second email threatning complaints to office fair trade which you shouldnt need to do as i think they now have the idea people are not happy.

I have blueway aircondition which I bought about a year ago, now the remote do not work any more, I have contacted the BingLee, the store where I bought the product and they are on able to help me find a new remote.
I would like to know how to contact the manifactural for a replacement?

  29. rachael

Please can you help me. I have a split type room air conditioner on my house boat and i cant get the remote control to work either. I have tried new batteies but with no luck. I also as old mate above can not seem to get my paws on a replacement control, or find where to go to purchase a new one. I really need to be able to turn the unit on as it is very bloody hot up here in the north west 🙂

    Hey JD,

Took me three months for ‘Fortuna’ to come out and look at me E4 problem.

The Tech – came out, turned the air con, on, and guess what??

It worked perfectly??!!?? and still is.. been 3 weeks now…

    Can’t believe it…

    Thanks for your help JD.

  31. Juleigh

I have a 2.5 hp split system Blueway which I have had for 6 years with no trouble whatsoever.I turned the air con on this morning and all is working but not cooling. Do air cons need to be regased.

  32. Bill Hutchison Post author

    Hi Juleigh,

Air conditioners do occasionally need regassing. I have never needed to regas any of our house aircons, but I did have to do my car air conditioner once. The amount of cooling dropped slowly over over time till if eventually just didn’t work enough to make a difference.

There could be a leak in the gas system, but if a tech comes out to re-gas the air conditioner they will need to check all the hoses any way.

    Good luck.

  34. Cheryl

    Hi Jim,

You should make a complaint to the Customer Service people at Fortuna, and make your complete dissatisfaction known, who knows your system might be a defective one. I have a 3.2kw in my lounge room and it works fine, its not noisy at all and its 2 years old. I only paid $300 for my split system. And I bought a portable Blueway Air Con in December and that one is noisy although it works just fine.

    Cheers

    Hi,
My husband and I brought a home here in Bowen Qld Dec 2007, the Blue way AC we have in the main room has not worked since day 1.
The house was brand new when we brought it.
Sept last year a guy working for the builder that built the house came and looked at it, and told us that the builder had bought all the BW AC only to have them uninstalled in the houses he built because they were faulty.
As for our unit it was a warranty problem and to get back onto the builder.
We got onto the builder who then got onto to presumably Blueway they rang us for the unit no
and proof of purchase, my hubby rang the builder back to get the receipt no rang BW back and now they wont the electricians license number that installed the unit.
By this time by husband was getting very annoyed and gave the lady the phone number to the builder so that they could talk to each other.
We have heard nothing back, all up we have been waiting 6 months.
It is so hot in our main room we usually have to wait until it is cool so that we can eat our meals.
Not very happy with Blue Way at all!

No surprises with Harvey Norman’s no service – to them after sales service means stitching up the next customer after a sale – Gerry talks about treating people right in his CPA article – give us a break – your reality of treating customers, employees and suppliers like crap doesn’t quite add up with your fantasy writing and talking – Go Harvey – yes really – go harvey – away!!!

    Bill.

I was just wondering if you new anyone in Townsville that fixes Blueway Air Cons? As mine has just started showing “E4” and I have a business from home (family day care) and it is way to hot for the poor kids but I dont know where to find the right person to fix it for me. Any suggestions?

  39. Stephen

Blueqway are playing games again today Friday. So called ‘Joe’ said he would be at my address this week to fix the heap of junk. As usual they didn’t . My wife rang today and so called ‘sarah’ answered and fobbed my wife off. ‘Christine ‘answered after 35 mins and fobbed me off as usual. They have also hung up on me twice today. Sus names? sus promises? sus business?

  40. Shez

My husband and I are having MAJOR issues with Blueway. We’re currently renting and we work from home and have 7 computers running. We are copping the E4 error. We had a bloke come out, not from Blueway, some other mod, and he replaced the outdoor…something or other. Not the whole unit just something inside it. A week later…boom…E4. Not only that but it cuts off…our agent apparently has contacted Blueway but I’m trying to look for their details to complain as it’s been 3 weeks and we’ve heard nothing…if anyone knows their head office I’d love to know…can’t find anything on the web about them. I’d frankly never purcase a Blueway…I’m a Delhongi fan instead.

The remote for my Blueway A/C packed it in and I tried to source a new one from the retailer Bing Lee at Carlingford. They were not at all helpful. I tried to ring Blueway in Sydney who never answer the phone. I rang Bing Lee head office to whinge about them not supporting a product they sold me. I was then given a mobile phone number for Jose from Blueway who was put out that I had his mobile number. I told him that until he either sorts my issue or changes his mobile number I will be harrassing him. I got some action and was quoted either $80.00 or $140.00 depending on the type I wanted. I opted for the cheaper one but am still awaiting delivery. This company real lacks customer service skills and product back up.

  42. Cheryl

    Good luck!!!

The last time I ordered a new remote it took 3 weeks until I rang and threatened them with a call to the ACCC. Funny enough I received it the next day via Express. Give them an incentative to get their ass’s into gear and they tend to get off it.

  43. Doug

I am very pleased with my 3 units (each bedroom and loungeroom). Instalation was with a local bloke who arranged the electrician, etc.. Wiring code requires the isolation switch near the outside unit. Ideally the unit should have earth leakage detectors, but the electrician used thermal circuit breakers. Only one fault to date. The condensor for one of the fan motors gave up. It was impossible to source a genuine part locally, but a condensor of the right rating (abeit a lot larger physically) was obtained and everything works again fine. The inside units are a tad noisy, but, hey, these are cheap units and you get what you pay for. I find it hard to justify the expense of a top notch “inverter” air-conditioner when it might only be used on and off for two months of the year. If you have more than one unit, the remote controls are interchangable.

  44. Bill Hutchison Post author

Ours is still chugging away with no problems either. With this article and all the comments about them I was starting to wonder if I was one of the only people who have had good experiences with Blueway Air Conditioners.
