Will Your Next Roof be a “Green Roof”

So what is a “Green Roof” to begin with?

Example of a Green RoofWikipedia defines a green roof as “a roof of a building which is partially or completely covered with plants. It may be a tended roof garden or a more self-maintaining ecology like a living wall or breathing wall. An earth structure often has such a roof, as plants simply grow naturally over it, making a hill that is from some angles indistinguishable from a natural one.”

Green Roofs claim to deliver cost savings as they provide greater material lifespan (up to twice as long) and savings on heating and cooling costs because of the insulation that it provides. Green Roofs also claim to provide sound insulating benefits. (for a full list of personal and public benefits can be read at About Green Roofs)

Green roofs from what I have read today seem to be most common in Europe, are slowly making headway in North America, and green roofs are looking to be a viable option here in Australia. Green roofs are not limited by the climate that you are in, as I initially thought, but they can be built in pretty much any climate using native plant life. This means that even here in Queensland and Townsville there is the possibility of building using a green roof. There is a good article about green roofs in Australia at On Line Opinion – A roofing answer to climate change.

Townsville Stump Grinding

We had to remove some more tree stumps from our yard so that we could move the fence into the proper boundary position. The previous owners had moved the fence into the neighbours hard and planted a stack of trees on the property line. Now our neighbours are putting in a new car port, so we are needing to move the fence line back and get rid of the trees.

With the neighbours we cut down the trees a few months back, but now we had to get rid of the old tree stumps. We had considered hiring out a bobcat to rip them up, but with the root system on these trees that could have caused a bit too much damage to our driveway and possible the nice new slab under our house. So we decided that the best thing for us to do would be to get in a stump grinder to grind down the tree stumps.

We had dealt with Ivan from Townsville Stump Grinding before when grinding down the stumps in our backyard and were very happy with his work, so we decided to use him again to get rid of these new stumps. Continue Reading →

Daytime Watering Finally Band

As I have said before, I think that daytime watering should be banned almost all the time anyways. It is a complete waist of water to be watering in the heat of the day and the Townsville City Council had finally agreed.

There is now no watering allowed between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm in Townsville.

Although these measures might seem quite strict for Townsville, in reality they are nothing compared to the total ban on watering that they are considering for down in Brisbane right now. Australia is currently in what some are calling the worst drought in 100-years. So that will have to lead to some pretty drastic action needing to be taken.

Large Tree Finally Gone

Caleb and I spent the weekend finally finishing off removing the last of the tall Eucalyptus tree from the back of our house. We spent the better part of a half day removing all the mulch from where the stump grinder had ground up the remainder of the Eucalyptus trunk. The trunk was probably about 1.5 metres (almost 5-feet) in diameter, so there was a lot of mulch left over from it.

Digging up the Mulch from the Stump Grinder

Unfortunately it was not easy finally getting the tree lopping finished off. It took us almost a month of pestering to finally get the tree lopper out to finish the job (check out the original story, Using a Cherry Picker to Cut Down our Tree). They finally came and almost finished the job, but not completely.
