Buying Shares at Bunnings

A few friends of mine have joked that I really should have purchased shares at Bunnings before I started doing all my renovations. Bunnings is pretty much the Australian version of Revy (for you Canadians) or Home Depot.

Although we did not purchase those shares, which I sort of wish I had now, we did get a credit card that gives us a point for every dollar that we spend. We can then transfer those points onto our frequent flier program with Qantas, which is a pretty good deal. By putting every expense that we can on our credit card, not only our renovations but also our every day expenses, we were able to fly Tamara and Caleb down to Adelaide for half price when I did the move from our old house to this one.

Now just to clarify things a little, we only use the credit card to spend money that we have and we pay it off every month so that we don’t have to pay interest on it. As long as we do that this credit card deal works pretty well for us.

I actually read about a pretty good little deal on a credit card in the US that is specifically designed for renovators. Basically it gives a refund of 1% on all your purchases, but if you use it at a home improvement store you get back 3%.

You can read more about that credit card deal here, houseblogs.net: A Credit Card with Home Improvement Rewards.

What do the Symbols Mean on my Oven?

I really like the oven in our new house. It actually works!!! The one in our old house would take about 30 – 45 minutes to pre-heat. This one usually pre-heats even to the highest temperature in about 5 – 10 minutes! It’s great.

There is one thing that confuses me though. I think that the oven is a multi-function fan forced oven but I don’t know what the functions are.

I would love your comments about what you think these do.

Below is a picture of the function dial on the oven. If you know what each function is please let me know in the comments on this post.

The Renovation Bug

Ever since Tamara and I have owned a house (only 2.5 years now) we have been renovating. Our first house we fully painted, re-did the floors, insulated the ceiling, renovated the bathroom, replaced all the doors and added a deck. This house we are doing a lot more, as you can read on the rest of this site.

Well it seems that renovation bug is contageous and has even been caught by my parents…

They have been living in the same house for about 20-years now in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The completely renovated the basement and did some medium size work in the kitchen before, but now they are renovating the entire living area upstairs to open it up from three seperate areas to one large open area. The drawings that renderings that they have sent to us have looked pretty amazing so far.

They will be starting this about the same time that we start having our house lifted so next time we go back to Canada to visit is sure is going to be a big change for us…

Bad Townsville Contractors & Dismantled Deck In the Garden

The contractors that we had hired almost didn’t the deck down in time from the old house. They didn’t show up for work on time and didn’t take advantage of the days without any rain to pull down the deck. Instead they left it to the last available three days when it was pouring rain (a very heavy tropic storm) to get done. Then they went ahead and told me that they had been out the night before until after 3:00am at the casino. It didn’t instill a lot of confidence…

In the end they delivered the pieces of our deck into our back yard on the last possible day. Although we had considered using them for the building that needs to happen under the house after it is lifted I have lost all confidence in them and won’t be hiring them, even if they come in with a very cheap quote. They could definitely talk a good game, but they just didn’t deliver.
